Handling brass

Brass guide

Version 1, February 2026.

Handling of brass upon receipt

Brass is a living material that will develop a patina over time. To ensure the best results, we recommend that the products are handled correctly upon receipt.

1. Raw/untreated brass

Untreated brass will naturally oxidize and change color over time.

Upon receipt, it is recommended to:

  • Carefully unpack the product using clean, dry cotton gloves.

  • Avoid direct contact with greasy fingers as this can leave marks and accelerate patination.

  • Check the surface in good light for transport damage.

  • Store the product dry and in a stable indoor climate until installation.

Any minor color variations, shadows or beginning patination are a natural part of the material's character and are not considered a defect.

2. Waxed brass

Waxed brass has a protective surface that delays patination and provides a more uniform finish.

Upon receipt, it is recommended to:

  • Handle the product carefully to avoid scratches or pressure marks in the wax layer.

  • Avoid using cleaning agents before installation.

  • Wipe gently with a dry, soft cloth if necessary.

  • Store the product dry and at room temperature.

The wax layer can wear off over time – especially on contact surfaces. This is a natural process and part of the material's development.

3. Burnished brass

Burnished brass has a chemically treated surface, which gives a darker and deeper tone.

Upon receipt, it is recommended to:

  • Unpack the product with gloves to avoid grease marks.

  • Avoid moisture, water and cleaning agents as the surface is more sensitive.

  • Do not polish or use abrasive materials.

  • Check for uniformity in color – minor nuance differences may occur and are part of the craftsmanship.

The surface will develop a natural patina over time, especially at points of contact.

General recommendations

  • Avoid contact with water, acidic liquids and cleaning agents before installation.

  • Install the products as soon as possible after receipt.

  • Any transport damage must be reported immediately upon receipt and before use.

Brass is a natural material – variations in color, structure and patination are part of its unique character and contribute to a vibrant and exclusive expression.
